Just what does the war on terror mean?

Terrorism is a tactic. It can be used by anyone, anytime, when they feel themselves aggrieved and have no other good way to get revenge.

The president speaks of winning the war on terror. What does he mean? Does he think that there are a finite number of terrorists in the world and if we kill them all, we will have won the war? That is silly. No matter how many you kill, more are being created. All you have to do is violate some people's rights in such a way that they cannot fight back.

The one and only thing that we can do to stop the terrorists is to stop creating new terrorists with foreign policy abuse.

Mike,

If you have a "better" idea, and it is hard to imagine an idea that is worse....I would like you to specify.

But if you think you can effect this as a state rep., I would like to know how.

Of course, in the capacity of state representative, I would have no influence on foreign policy. I don't limit myself to state issues in this blog.

I see our current situation as the child's game of tit for tat, but played by adults with real guns and real bombs. The game did not start on 9/11/01. We can trace the joint provocations back to at least 1953. The CIA overthrew an elected government in Iran and placed a vicious dictator in power. The Shah continued to oppress Iranians till he was finally overthrown in 1979. Our action in 1953 created the situation that put a religious government into power. The population suffered under the Shah for 26 years, all the time knowing that the US had put them into that position.

We need to reform our foreign policy. That means prompt withdrawal from Iraq, a heartfelt apology for the damage we did to their people and nation, and assurances that we would never consider a preemptive strike ever again.

We should make it a matter of US law that preemptive strikes are war crimes punishable by the death penalty.
